Tianjin Restaurant Review: Tube Station

Tianjin has its fair share of pizza joints. But there’s a new kid on the block, and it’s slinging serious pies.

For the uninitiated, here’s the low-down on Tube Station: It’s a Beijing legend. The ultra-popular pizza chain was founded in the capital in 1999, and now it has 17 stores across the country. Now the Tube has finally traveled to Tianjin, and we couldn’t be happier. It’s tagline in the capital is “Biggest Pizza in Beijing,” and when they say “biggest,” they don’t just mean “popular.” Tube Station literally makes the biggest pies.

Don’t worry if you’re not in the mood for Tube Station’s signature 32-inch (32!) ‘Party Monster,’ – the restaurant also serves a variety of normal-sized American-style pizzas, in addition to salads, appetizers and desserts. We kick off our meal with a house salad (RMB33) for our health, and thick French fries (RMB23) for, well, not our health. We also try some very saucy buffalo wings (RMB34, and have a bunch of napkins nearby you – you’ve been warned).

Then comes the main event: pizzas. With over 15 flavors, Tube Station’s got a pizza for everyone. The classic is the Garbage Pail (RMB170; all prices for a medium pizza) – an indulgent choice featuring everything from veggies to meat. Not bothered about the vegetables? Meat lovers can’t go wrong with the Philly special (RMB145), topped with succulent little bits of beef, and the BBQ chicken (RMB130) sauces up the whole experience.

Visiting Tube Station is best with a group, so you can share pizza pies to your heart’s (and stomach’s) content. While we eat, 90s rap videos play on the screen overhead. All in all, good vibes abound – but just like the tube during rush hour, expect crowds. Tube Station is hugely popular outside Tianjin, and on our first visit, we see lines spill out of this restaurant too.

If you’re especially anti-crowds – or if you’re simply feeling lazy simply – you can go online and order pizza directly to your home. Because when it comes to tasty grub, Tube Station delivers.
